Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are new inhomogeneous composite materials in which the volume fraction of two component varies smoothly and continuously across the given direction.
FGMs are mixtures of ceramics and metal, where external ceramic layers due to large thermal resistance are exposed to high temperatures, while internal metallic constituents, owing to their stronger mechanical performance, are able to reduce the possibility of fracture.
